The park is part of the Virunga conservation area covering an area of about 434 square kilometers as was gazetted as a national park in 1991 mainly to protect the world’s prized fascinating mountain gorillas. The park is home to more than 400 endangered mountain gorillas with only two habituated gorilla families that’s Nyakagezi and Hirwa, making it a more intimate and exclusive experience compared to other gorilla trekking experiences.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Pick up from Kampala / Entebbe and transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
On the first day of your 3 Days Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Gorilla Trekking Safari, depending on your location in Kampala/ Entebbe, your driver guide will pick you up, brief you about the tour, and then start the journey to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in southwestern Uganda. The drive to the park will take about 9-10 hours or you can opt to take a domestic flight to Kisoro Airstrip which takes around 1.5 hours. If flying, upon arrival at Kisoro Airstrip, you’ll be transferred to your lodge near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
On the way you will have an en-route lunch in Mbarara where you will continue the journey with spectacular views of the beautiful scenery driving through the Ugandan countryside. Upon your arrival in the evening at your lodge at Mount Gahinga Lodge, you will check into your lodge for dinner, relaxation and overnight stay.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking
After an early breakfast on the second day of the 3 Days Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Gorilla Trekking Safari, your driver guide will pick you up from the lodge to transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing about the rules, regulations, and expectations of gorilla trekking. After the briefing, you will be allocated a gorilla family to trek and a park guide who is knowledgeable about the gorillas and well-conversed with trails in the jungle. Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park takes about 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorillas are located because they like to move from one place to another in search of food. During trekking, you’ll have the opportunity to encounter other wildlife that call the park home such as golden monkeys, buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, duikers, giant forest hogs, as well as different colorful bird species among others. Once the gorillas are found you will be allowed to spend one hour with them in their habitat which gives you an opportunity to watch them carry out their daily activities like feeding, breastfeeding, and playing, observe their behaviors, take great photos, and record the breathtaking moments to show people back home.
After the one-hour encounter with the mountain gorillas, you will trek back to the park headquarters where you will be awarded a certificate for participating in gorilla trekking as a souvenir for a successful gorilla trek. After the trek, your driver guide will pick you then drive you back to enjoy a late lunch at your lodge. Relax and unwind after the trek or take a short nature walk around the lodge.
Later in the afternoon, you will join the lodge’s guide for a short nature walk around the lodge where you will be treated with the astonishing views of the surrounding environment. After your short nature walk around the lodge, return to the lodge for dinner where you will stay overnight.
Day 3: Return to Kampala/ Entebbe
On the last day of your 3 Days Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Gorilla Trekking Safari, wake up and have a relaxed breakfast, check out of the lodge, and meet up with your driver guide to transfer back to Kampala. The drive will take longer than eight hours, so you’ll have time for a leisurely lunch along the way. After a long day, you’ll arrive in Kampala/ Entebbe in the evening and be dropped off at your hotel/home or at the Entebbe Airport for your flight out.
