Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Pick-up and transfer to Volcanoes National Park for Gorilla Trekking
This 1 Day Rwanda Gorilla Tour has you being picked up by our company driver-guide from your apartment/Hotel/Airport early in the morning and then embark on a transfer to Volcanoes National Park for your gorilla trekking adventure. The drive to Volcanoes National park takes approximately 2 hours from Kigali, a very early start is required. Once at the park, you will head straight to Kinigi, the park headquarters from where you will join the rest in a briefing at by the park rangers at 7 am. The park rangers will orient you on what you should expect to encounter during gorilla trek and also set out the rules and regulations you are expected to follow while in the search of the mountain gorillas. This is all done over coffee served by the park.
You will then be placed in groups of 8 and allocated groups to track. Gorilla group allocation is based on the physical fitness levels of the trekkers. After, you will embark on the search of the endangered mountain gorillas who are giant and yet very gentle along with park rangers and guides who will share their knowledge of the park and all its inhabitants. During the trek, be on the lookout for other park animals like forest elephants, buffaloes, forest hogs, chimpanzees among others along with various bird species like the Rwenzori Turaco.
Once you encounter the gorillas, enjoy being just feet away from them-these near humans with whom we share a 98% DNA. Look at them going about their daily life as they feed, groom, rest, make nests for the night, play and so on. The juveniles who are always inquisitive and curious might come and play on you- be careful though, for you will be under a candid watch by the protective silverback. You can take pictures and record videos of the whole session, for as long as you do not use flash cameras.
After the allotted time is done, trek back to the starting point and enjoy your packed lunch on a stopover during the trek back. The gorilla trek can take between 30 minutes-4 hours or more depending on the location of the gorillas. At the park headquarters, you will be met by your driver-guide who is ready to transfer you back to Kigali Airport or your hotel/apartment on a very scenic road drive.
