Chimpanzee habituation experience in Uganda is an activity which allows tourists to spend more time with chimpanzees in their natural habitat. The habituation of chimpanzees in Uganda is carried out in destinations such as Kibale forest national park which is located in the western part of Uganda. Chimpanzee habituation also takes place in the Budongo forest.

Rules and regulations of chimpanzee habituation in Uganda

There are many guidelines that tourists engaging in chimpanzee habituation in Uganda are expected to follow and they include the following;

Individuals below the age of 15 years are not allowed to engage in chimpanzee habituation experiences during tours in Uganda.

A distance of about 7 meters is to be kept when in the presence of the chimpanzees in the forests during the habituation experience.

Smoking around the chimpanzees is prohibited during the chimpanzee habituation experience.

Eating around the chimpanzees is also not allowed during the chimpanzee habituation experience in Uganda.

Tourists visiting Uganda are also not expected to feed chimpanzees during the chimpanzee habituation experience.

Recording the chimpanzees using flash photography is not allowed during chimpanzee habituation because it can chase away the chimpanzees into hiding further in the forest.

By following the guidelines communicated during the briefing of chimpanzee habituation, tourists can ensure their safety and that of the chimpanzees in the forests.

Habituation of chimpanzees in Kibale national park

When visiting Kibale national park, the chimpanzee habituation experience can be done as a full day activity in the presence of the chimpanzees. Apart from the chimpanzees, many other primates can also be encountered in the Kibale forest.

Chimpanzee habituation in Kibale national park is an activity which introduces chimpanzees to the presence of humans in their natural habitat. After the chimpanzees undergo the habituation process, tourist can successfully engage in chimpanzee trekking experiences and interact with the chimpanzees.

During the chimpanzee habituation experience, the chimpanzee behavior is observed by the rangers and researchers as well as the tourists. The process of getting the chimpanzees used to humans in their habitat can take years and is done for a group of chimpanzees at a time.

The activity involves going deep into the Kibale forest since the chimpanzees which are searched for during chimpanzee habituation are not yet habituated. It is also an activity that doesn’t follow the usual trails used during chimpanzee trekking experiences.

It takes about a full day to engage in the chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale national park and the activity also begins with a briefing at the park headquarters.  4 hours are spent with chimpanzees during the habituation experience.

While in the forest during the chimpanzee habituation experience, tourists spend a lot of time watching the chimpanzees and the researches can also be able to identify unique features on the chimpanzees being watched and also understand their characters.

Kibale national park is also home to primates including black and white colobus monkeys, L’hoest monkeys, vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, grey cheeked mangabeys, red tailed monkeys, olive baboons among others.

Tourists can engage in many other activities around Kibale national park apart from chimpanzee habituation experiences and these include bird watching, guided nature walks and also community visits.

The different places to stay during a chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale national park include budget, midrange and luxury lodges such as Isunga lodge, Chimpundu lodge, Primate lodge, Crater safari lodge, Turaco treetops lodge,  Kibale forest lodge, Kyaninga lodge, Ndali lodge, Papaya lodge among others.

To get to Kibale national park for the chimpanzee habituation experience, tourists can drive for about 5 to 6 hours from Kampala.

Habituation of chimpanzees in Budongo forest

Chimpanzee habituation in Uganda is also done in the Budongo forest located in the north western part of Uganda.

The Budongo forest is located in the southern part of the Murchison falls national park and during safaris at the destinations, tourist can visit the chimpanzees of Budongo and spend time with them in their natural habitat.

The habituation of chimpanzees in Budongo forest is still a work in progress but tourists visiting Uganda can still take part in chimpanzee trekking experiences at the destination and interact with the already habituated chimpanzees groups during the morning or afternoon treks.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority overlooks the habituation experience and also manages the national parks in Uganda including Kibale national park.

By engaging in chimpanzee habituation, tourists contribute to conservation and protection of the chimpanzees around Kibale national park. Another activity which is done in Uganda which is similar to chimpanzee habituation is gorilla habituation which is done in Bwindi national park.

Cost of chimpanzee habituation permit

A chimpanzee permit for the habituation experience costs 250 USD per person for foreign nonresidents, 200 USD for foreign residents and 200,000 UGX for East Africans.

The fees charged for the chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale national park is inclusive of park entrance fees for the park and also guide fees for the day of the activity. Park entrance fee for Kibale national park is 40 USD per person which is valid for 24 hours.

On the other hand, tourists visiting Kibale national park can engage in chimpanzee trekking experiences and spend about 1 hour with the habituated group of chimpanzees. This activity costs 200 USD per person which is cheaper as compared to the price of chimpanzee habituation.

Chimpanzee trekking can also be done in other destinations in Uganda include the Budongo forest in Murcison falls national park where it costs 140 USD per person and also the Kyambura gorge in Queen Elizabeth national park where visiting the chimpanzees costs 50 USD per person.

Many other expenses are incurred during the chimpanzee habituation experience in Uganda such as transport costs and accommodation costs.

Best time to engage in chimpanzee habituation

Chimpanzee habituation in Uganda can be done at anytime of the year but the best time to engage in the activity is during the months of the rainy season around March to May and also around November when fewer tourists visit the parks making it convenient to visit the chimpanzees.

The dry season is also a good time to engage in chimpanzee habituation in Uganda because of the favorable weather.
