Detailed Itinerary for 6 Days Kilimanjaro Hiking Safari

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Moshi

Pick up from Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport and transport to Moshi, well known as the entrance to Mount Kilimanjaro. Connect to your hotel, check-in and have dinner.

Day 2: Moshi- Marangu- Mandara

After having breakfast at your hotel and a brief tour briefing from the guide, you will head for Kilimanjaro National Park’s Marangu Gate (45 minutes from Moshi). After registering with park authorities, our ascent will officially begin with a four-hour hike to the Mandara campsite. You will pass through a dense rainforest zone, with a strong risk of rain in the afternoon. You’ll spend the night in Mandara Hut (2,750m), a charming cluster of structures. There are bathrooms with running water.

Day 3: Mandara- Horombo

Today, we’ll continue our journey through the forest for a little while before reaching the heather and moorland zone at around 3,000m. At this elevation, you may take in breathtaking vistas of the mountain summits. We’ll spend the night in Horombo Hut (3,720m), which is located in a valley surrounded by enormous lobelia and groundsel, vegetation typical of this semi-alpine zone. There are bathrooms with running water.

Day 4: Horombo-Kibo

Our journey continues beyond the final watering station and up to Kilimanjaro’s saddle, which lies between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. The flora thins down as we approach the desert-like alpine zone (about 4,000m), and after we cross the saddle, Kibo Mountain appears. The saddle is an alpine desert that looks like a lunar environment. Be aware of the indicators of altitude sickness. The seven-hour trek will be done at a moderate pace. We will spend the night at Kibo Hut (4,703m), which is a nice stone structure with no running water.

Horombo

This semi-desert zone receives less than 250mm of rainfall each year; the ground frequently freezes at night, while daytime temperatures can reach 30 degrees Celsius or more. In these circumstances, few vegetation survives save for lichens and grasses.

Day 5: Kibo- Summit- Horombo

We will begin our trek to Kilimanjaro’s summit just after midnight, because it is easier to ascend the scree slope to Gillman’s Point (5,861m) on the crater rim while it is frozen, and an early start for the six-hour hike boosts our chances of reaching the summit before daybreak. From Gilman’s Point, it is a two-hour round journey along the crater’s edge to Africa’s highest point, Uhuru Peak. From the top, we descend all the way to Horombo Hut, where we will spend our final night on the mountain.

Day 6: Horombo- Moshi

Today’s descent continues past the Mandara camp to the mountain’s base, where each hiker will get a well-earned certificate. From here, you will be taken to a Base Hotel in Moshi for dinner and stay.
